Your First ATR Run
Trail running looks intimidating from the parking lot and stops being intimidating about four minutes in. Here's exactly how a first morning goes.
You will not get dropped
We stop and regroup at every trail intersection. Somebody always volunteers to run the back. If you need to bail early, say so at the trailhead and a person walks back with you. Nobody has been left in the woods and we intend to keep that record.
Get there ten minutes early
That's when everyone stands around the lot arguing about distance and lying about how their week went. Walk up, say it's your first time, and you'll be adopted on the spot.
Every route splits
There's a short option and a long option at the first junction, and picking the short one carries exactly zero shame. Most people run less than they planned and stay longer than they planned.
Parking is free almost everywhere
FATS, Bartram, Keg Creek and the Canal are all free to park at. Trailhead pins are on every card in The Trails.
Afterward, usually food
Somebody generally ends up at a tailgate or a taco place. You're invited. You are also completely free to drive home sweaty and skip it.
- Shoes you don't mind ruining. Trail shoes help; road shoes are fine to start.
- More water than you think you need. Augusta in July is not a joke.
- A headlamp for anything starting after 6:30pm, roughly September through March.
- Your phone. Service is patchy at FATS and Modoc, so download the map first.
- Your pace. There is no pace.
- Being new. Half the group was new within the last two years.
- Gear. Nobody is looking at your vest.
- Getting lost. You won't be alone long enough to manage it.
- Dogs: welcome, on a leash.
- Kids: welcome. Always.
- Strollers: Canal towpath and the Greeneway.

Trail Conditions
Hurricane Helene (Sept 2024) knocked down thousands of trees across CSRA trails. FATS is fully back as of June 2026 — some SC creek trails are still digging out.
| Trail | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| FATS (all 6 loops) | Open | Fully reopened June 26, 2026 — Helene recovery complete. Watch for USFS wet-weather closures via @FATSUpdate. |
| Bartram Trail | Open | Clear end to end. |
| Keg Creek | Open | Clear. Bridges slick after rain. |
| Mistletoe State Park | Open | Open — state park parking fee applies. |
| Canal Singletrack | Open | Check odd/even day direction before you drop in. |
| Modoc / Stevens Creek | Closed | Helene damage. Closed until further notice. |
| Turkey Creek | Closed | Helene damage. Closed until further notice. |
| Wine Creek | Closed | Helene damage. Closed until further notice. |
Somebody Cut Those Trees Out Of Your Way.
Helene put thousands of trees across the CSRA in September 2024. Getting FATS fully open again took until June 2026 — Tower Trail alone needed 1,822 trees cleared, Deep Step another 687 plus 82 rootball and tread repairs. That work was done by volunteers with their own truck beds, chainsaws and Saturdays.
Our third mission line is "help maintain the trails," and this is the part where that stops being a sentence on a website. SORBA CSRA runs the work parties and they explicitly want runners, not just mountain bikers — no experience needed, tools provided, and you get to point at a section of trail forever afterward.
Race Calendar
Local trail & ultra events in and around the CSRA. Grassroots ATR events are free, weird, and announced in the Facebook group — dates marked TBD until the club calls them.

Augusta Trail Runners is a free club for anyone who likes running trails in the Greater Augusta area. Who are we? People who love running — everything from 5Ks to marathons, ultras, road miles, and triathlons. We're also mountain bikers, hikers, backpackers, and all-around outdoor enthusiasts who share one thing: a passion for the trail.
All are welcome, and we mean it literally. First trail run ever? Perfect. Chasing a hundred-miler? Also perfect. Somebody in the group has done it and will happily talk your ear off about it for six miles.
Leadership is just runners who've been around a while and volunteered to help: picking run locations, organizing group runs, volunteering at local races, and swinging tools at trail work days alongside SORBA CSRA. After Helene dropped thousands of trees on our trails, that last part stopped being abstract.
Let's keep this club clean, fun, and running focused.
The ATR Mission
- Spread the word about the 100+ miles of trail hiding in the greater Augusta area.
- Build a passionate group of trail runners who love running — and each other's company.
- Help maintain the trails so everyone can enjoy them as much as we do.
- No drop. No dues. No egos. Headlamps mandatory after dark.
